OTTAWA, 3 December 2003 — Martin Havlat scored twice and Martin Prusek made 30 saves to lead the Ottawa Senators past the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Monday.
The loss ended a 12-game unbeaten streak for the Flyers, who had gone 10-0-2 to claim the NHL points lead.
The Senators won for only the third time in nine games (3-4-0-2), stopping the team they have knocked out of the playoffs for the last two seasons.
After a scoreless first period, Havlat grabbed two goals in the second to put the Senators in front for good.
Ottawa (10-8-2-3), which was within one game of last season’s Stanley Cup finals, has struggled this time round but looked sharp against the Flyers, who had not lost since Oct. 30 at New Jersey. Keith Primeau brought the Flyers to within a goal with a short-handed marker three minutes into the third period. Anton Volchenkov’s goal at 12:08, however, restored Ottawa’s two-goal lead.
Daniel Alfredsson completed the scoring into an empty net with 1:16 to play.
Penguins 4 Thrashers 3
In Pittsburgh, Ramzi Abid’s goal at 16:17 of the third period lifted the Penguins to a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Thrashers.
Brian Holzinger, Dick Tarnstrom and Ryan Malone also tallied as the Penguins ended a two-game losing streak to win for only the sixth time (6-12-4-1) this season.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves in goal for the Penguins, who traded forward Martin Straka in a cost-cutting move Sunday.
