TOKYO, 12 April 2004 — Singapore’s Ronald Susilo enjoyed the best day in his career when he outclassed Bao Chunlai of China to win the men’s singles title at the Japan Open badminton tournament yesterday.
The Inondesian-born 24-year-old controlled the game throughout the 45-minute battle against the left-handed world NO. 5 and won 15-13, 15-6.
“It was a good match. I did pretty well today. I’m very happy to win this tournament. I hope to do even better in my next tournament,” said Susilo.
“Of course, it’s special for me. It’s great to win this prestigious Japan Open. I thank all the people coming today to watch. Hopefully, they will keep on supporting me in other tournaments, too.”
Yesterday’s win was his biggest career title and carries a $14,400 first prize. It follows his first victory at the Thailand Open in January in the Grand Prix series last year.
Indonesian-born Mia Audina Tjiptawan, who now plays for the Netherlands, won the women’s singles titles defeating All England champion and No. 1 seed Gong Ruina of China 7-11, 11-7, 11-7.
