NEW YORK, 14 April 2004 — Travis Hafner hit a grand slam homer as the Cleveland Indians celebrated their home opener with a 6-3 win over the Minnesota Twins in American League play on Monday. The first baseman belted his round tripper off loser Kyle Lohse (0-2) in the third inning to help the Tribe end a three-game losing streak. Cliff Lee (1-0) went six innings for the win, allowing two runs on five hits and getting three double plays to help Cleveland improve to 3-5. He walked four and struck out one. Matt Lawton added a solo home run in the seventh inning for the Indians, who also had eight hits.
Coco Crisp had two hits and drove in a run for the Indians, while Omar Vizquel also had two hits, a walk and scored a run.
Lohse went six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Hafner’s first career grand slam opened the scoring and gave Cleveland a 4-0 lead it would never relinquish.
In the late game, Brad Fullmer’s three-run double keyed a five-run sixth inning that helped the Texas Rangers edge the Anaheim Angels 7-6. Hank Blalock added three hits, including a go-ahead two-run single, for the Rangers. Carlos Almanzar (1-0) pitched a perfect sixth inning to pick up the win and Francisco Cordero survived a shaky ninth for his second save. Jarrod Washburn (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. Michael Young also had three hits for the Rangers, who had 11 hits in the game.
Shane Halter and Garret Anderson both had two hits and drove in a run for Texas.
