NEW YORK, 21 April 2004 — Derrek Lee hit a grand slam and Matt Clement pitched 6 1/3 solid innings to lead the Chicago Cubs to a convincing 8-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field on Monday.
Lee’s seventh inning drive off reliever Ryan Wagner clinched the win for the Cubs, who set a regular season series attendance record with 159,461 fans taking in the four-game series.
Clement (2-1) survived a shaky start to settle down and retire 11 batters in a row.
Clement allowed one run on four hits, with the run coming in the first inning, while striking out six and walking four.
Aramis Ramirez continued his hot hitting with another home run, his fifth of the season, while Corey Patterson added a two-run single for the Cubs, who moved over the .500 mark at 7-6 with the victory.
In other games, Barry Bonds hit the 666th home run of his career as the San Francisco Giants edged the San Diego Padres 4-3.
Marquis Grissom hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the Giants, while Jeffrey Hammonds had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
Sean Burroughs had two hits and scored a run and drove in another for the Padres, who scored twice in the ninth in an attempted rally that fell short.
Jerome Williams (2-1) allowed one run and four hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 6 2/3 innings to get the win. Jim Brower got the last out for his first save.
Tyler Yates pitched 5 2/3 solid innings to lead the New York Mets past the Montreal Expos 4-1, handing the Expos their eighth straight loss.
Yates (1-1) got his first career win by allowing one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He also got his first major league hit at the plate.
Three relievers completed the 10-hitter, including Braden Looper, who pitched the ninth for his third save.
