NEW YORK, 21 April 2004 — Rondell White hit a three-run homer to key a six-run eighth inning as the Detroit Tigers rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians 10-4 on Monday.

The Tigers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in Cleveland and following a 65-minute rain delay, Indians reliever Jake Westbrook came on and pitched seven perfect innings while the Indians fought back to tie the score at 4-4.

But Detroit scored six runs to break the game open in the eighth and improved its record to 8-5, after losing an AL record 119 games last season.

Rafael Betancourt (0-2) took the loss after relieving Westbrook, who struck out seven in his masterful relief performance.

Betancourt was hit for three runs on three hits in just 1/3 inning, including White’s homer.

Al Levine (1-0) got credit for the win after tossing 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief.

Brandon Inge also drove in three runs for the Tigers, while Bobby Higginson had two RBI and Ivan Rodriguez had two hits and one RBI.

Casey Blake homered for Cleveland, while Matt Lawton drove in a pair of runs and Ronnie Belliard added three hits and scored a pair of runs.

In other American League games, Gabe Kapler drove in the winning run with an eighth inning single as the Boston Red Sox rallied to edge the New York Yankees 5-4 at Fenway Park.

Boston trailed 4-1 but rallied to win for the third time in four games against the Yankees in the much-anticipated series between the long-time rivals.

The Patriots Day game, which started at 1100 local time, was part of a huge sports day in Boston that also featured the Boston Marathon and game seven of the NHL playoff series between the Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens.

Jason Varitek homered for the Red Sox and David Ortiz had three hits and drove in a pair of runs.

Mike Timlin (1-1) got the win in relief, getting two outs, while Keith Foulke pitched the ninth for his third save.

Tom Gordon (0-1) allowed one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Jason Giambi homered for the Yankees while Hideki Matsui had three hits.

Alex Rodriguez finished the four-game series just 1-for-17 at the plate with six strikeouts.

In Seattle, Justin Duchscherer balked home Quinton McCracken with one out in the 14th inning, giving the Mariners a 2-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Raul Ibanez homered in the fifth inning for the Mariners.

Jermaine Dye homered in the ninth inning to tie the game for Oakland.

The Mariners won for just the fifth time in 13 games, while the A’s slipped to 8-5.
