FORT DE FRANCE, Martinique, 26 April 2004 — America’s 100m world record holder Tim Montgomery won the 100m here at the Grand Prix II meeting on Saturday as Olympic champion Maurice Greene failed to contest the final because of an injury.

Elsewhere, America’s 400m hurdles world silver medalist Sandra Glover ran a world best for the season, 55.00sec. Montgomery made no mistake in the final vastly improving his best time of the season running 10.08sec.

Torri Edwards won both the 100 and 200, the 100m world silver medalist beating Nigeria’s Mercy Nku into second in both sprints. Another American recorded the best time of the season in her event as Melissa Morrison timed 12.63 in the 100m hurdles.

Kenyans Kahugu and Barsosio Triumph in Madrid Marathon

Kenya’s Joseph Kahugu and Florence Barsosio won the Madrid Marathon yesterday, a race commemorating the victims of the March terrorist bombings. Kahugu won the men’s event in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 12 seconds. Mytamar Echandi was second and another Kenyan, Kipkosgel Chebet, finished third. Barsosio captured the women’s event in 2 hours, 34 minutes and 10 seconds.

Kibet, Catuna Win Rain-Delayed Nashville Marathon

Luke Kibet of Kenya won the rain-delayed Country Music Marathon on Saturday for his second Nashville victory. Anuta Catuna of Romania was the women’s winner in a race that was held up for 28 minutes at the start because of lightning. Runners took cover under tents and in a garage. Kibet’s time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 11 seconds was more than a minute slower than the record he set in 2000 on a much hillier course. Nephat Kinyanjui of Kenya was second in 2:15:52 and Alirio Carrasco of Colombia was third in 2:16:00.

Kenyan and Russian Win Salt Lake City Marathon

Gabriel Muchiri of Kenya won the inaugural Salt Lake City Marathon on Saturday for his first title at 42.2 kilometers. Lioudmila Kortchaguina of Russia was the women’s winner, recording her 10th marathon victory. Muchiri finished unofficially in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 21 seconds on a course.

Muchiri took the lead Saturday near the 19-kilometer mark and held it the rest of the way. Kortchaguina was timed in 2:30:47.

Africans Triumph in Belgrade Marathon

Christopher Isegwe of Tanzania won the 17th Belgrade Marathon on Saturday ahead of Peter Chemeyi and Benson Ogata of Kenya. Isegwe finished in 2 hours, 12 minutes and 53 seconds, beating Chemeyi by 52 seconds.

Rose Kerubo Nyangacha of Kenya won the women’s race, finishing in 2 hours, 32 minutes and 55 seconds, ahead of Gulsara Dadabayeva (2:42:18) and another Irina Songerlainen (2:43:12), both from Russia.

Iaroslav Musinschi of Moldova won the half-marathon race, finishing the 21.1 kilometer course in 1:04:41. His countrywoman Natalya Cherkez was the fastest among women in the half-marathon race, finishing at 1:14:34.
