NEW YORK, 29 April 2004 — The New York Yankees scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth innings to beat the Oakland Athletics 10-8 in American League action on Tuesday.

The American League champions snapped a four-game losing streak with the win, but are still just 9-11 to start the season despite their $183 million payroll.

Donovan Osborne (1-0) got just one out but that was enough to pick up the win in relief. Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his sixth save while breaking the franchise record for most games pitched with 523, one more than Dave Righetti.

Jim Mecir (0-2) took the loss after relieving Tim Hudson to start the eighth. He allowed the first five batters he faced to reach base and was charged with five runs on four hits without recording an out.

In Detroit, Darin Erstad hit a three-run double in the eighth innings as the Anaheim Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 10-4. Troy Glaus and Vladimir Guerrero both had three hits for the Angels. John Lackey (1-3) allowed three runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings.

In Baltimore, catcher Dan Wilson homered and later drove in the winning run as the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-5. John Olerud had three hits for the Mariners, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

In Kansas City, R.A. Dickey (3-1) pitched a solid 6 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits in leading the Texas Rangers past the Kansas City Royals 3-2. Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

In Chicago, Casey Blake’s run-scoring double in the top of the 10th inning helped the Cleveland Indians come from behind to beat the Chicago White Sox 11-7. The Indians scored four runs in the 10th to pick up the win. Omar Vizquel had four hits and drove in two runs for the Tribe, while Matt Lawton drove in three runs on two hits.

Hall’s Dramatic Homer Gives

Brewers Ninth Inning Win

Bill Hall hit a two-run pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Milwaukee Brewers to a come-from-behind 9-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. Chad Moeller also became the first Milwaukee player since Paul Molitor in 1991 to hit for the cycle with a home run in the second inning, double in the fourth, triple in the fifth and single in the sixth.

Despite Moeller’s feat, the Reds still led 8-6 heading to the bottom of the ninth inning.

With one out in the ninth, Wes Helms reached on an infield single then moved to second on a wild pitch and then third on a throwing error by Cincinnati catcher Jason LaRue. One out later, Moeller hit a grounder to third that should have ended the game, but Brandon Larson’s throwing error — the Reds’ fifth of the game — allowed Helms to score.

In St. Louis, Pat Burrell had four hits and drove in three runs, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Bobby Abreu and Mike Lieberthal both homered for the Phillies. Eric Milton (2-0) pitched five innings for the win, allowing three runs on seven hits.

Edgar Renteria homered for the Cardinals. Matt Morris (3-2) allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings.

In Denver, Jeromy Burnitz hit two home runs, one of them the first of three consecutive homers in the fourth inning, as the Colorado Rockies beat the Florida Marlins 13-10.

Burnitz smacked his second homer of the day off Florida starter Darren Oliver in the bottom of the fourth before Charles Johnson and Matt Holliday followed him with drives over the fence.

Jeff Conine had four hits and drove in three runs for Florida while Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in four runs.

In Phoenix, Brandon Webb scattered four hits over seven shutout innings, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Chicago Cubs 10-1. Luis Gonzalez had a three-run homer, Steve Finley blasted a two-run shot while Chad Tracy added his first major league homer for the D-Backs.

In San Diego, Ismael Valdez allowed four hits over eight innings while Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save as the Padres beat the Montreal Expos 3-0.

In San Francisco, J.D. Drew and Johnny Estrada homered and had three hits each, leading the Atlanta Braves past the San Francisco Giants 12-3. Andruw Jones had three hits and two RBI while Marcus Giles also had three hits for the Braves, who scored seven runs in the ninth inning.

In Los Angeles, Mike Piazza, Shane Spencer and Todd Zeile all hit home runs to lead the New York Mets to a 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
