OSAKA, Japan, 9 May 2004 — Olympic champion Maurice Greene overcame a poor start to win the 100 meters in 10.04 seconds at an IAAF international athletics meeting yesterday.
The 29-year-old beat fellow Americans Joshua J. Johnson (10.11) and Mickey Grimes (10.12) in Osaka.
World champion Allen Johnson was upset in the 110 meters hurdles, beaten by China’s Liu Xiang, who clocked 13.06. Johnson ran 13.13 with Jamaica’s Maurice Wignall third in 13.30.
Philip Mosima won the 5,000 meters in 13 minutes 24.94 seconds while John Kosgei claimed the 3,000 steeplechase title in 8:23.95 as Kenyan athletes took the top three places in both events. World silver medalist Torri Edwards won the women’s 100 meters in 11.05 ahead of Chryste Gaines (11.14) and Angela Daigle (11.27) in another American 1-2-3.
Marion Jones Easily Wins
100m at Jamaica Meet
In Kingston, Jamaica, five-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones captured her first double of 2004, winning the 100 meters and the long jump at the Jamaican International Invitational meet, the Jamaica Observer reported on Friday.
The American sprint queen easily won the 100m in 11.04 seconds, beating out local favorite Aleen Bailey who finished second in 11.19. Jamaican Tayna Lawrence was third in 11.29.
She won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, one inch. Tim Montgomery finished a disappointing fourth in the men’s 100m with a time of 10.25. Darvis Patton finished first in 10.12, in a photo finish over fellow American John Capel. American Gail Devers won the 100m hurdles in 12.50 and Maria Mutola, of Mozambique, captured the women’s 800m in 2:00.38.
Reigning world champion Mutola breezed to victory in the 800m finishing ahead of American Hazel Clarke 2.01.46 and Jamaica’s Michelle Ballantyne 2.01.86.
Savante Stringfellow, of the US, captured the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.81 meters. Eric Walder (7.42) finished second and Brian Thomas of Greece (6.64m) was third.
