NEW YORK, 13 May 2004 — Magglio Ordonez drove in five runs and had four of his team’s 19 hits as the White Sox pounded the Baltimore Orioles 15-0 in American League play in Chicago on Tuesday.
Mark Buehrle picked up his first win in a month with seven shutout innings as the White Sox supported him with an early 7-0 lead before scoring eight runs in the seventh inning.
Buehrle (2-1) allowed four hits with six strikeouts and two walks to win for the first time since April 10.
Jose Valentin and Frank Thomas both homered for the White Sox, with Thomas’ three-run shot keying the seventh inning explosion.
Willie Harris had four hits and scored four runs for Chicago and also had an RBI. Ross Gload drove in a pair of runs, while Timo Perez had three hits and an RBI.
In other games, pinch-hitter David McCarty hit a two-run triple in the eighth inning, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians.
In St. Petersburg, Hank Blalock hit a pair of homers, leading the Texas Rangers past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4. Laynce Nix added a two-run homer for Texas.
Erasmo Ramirez (2-2) got one out in relief and got credit for the win, while Francisco Cordero worked a scoreless ninth for his 11th save, giving the Rangers their eighth win in 11 games.
In Detroit, Damian Miller hit a two-out single in the 15th inning, giving the Oakland Athletics a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Justin Duchscherer (1-1) allowed just one hit over five innings of relief for the win, while Jim Mecir pitched the 15th for his second save.
Scott Hatteberg had four hits and drove in a run for the A’s.
In New York, Gary Sheffield doubled in the wining run in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Yankees an 8-7 win over the Anaheim Angels in a rain-delayed game at Yankee Stadium, ending Anaheim’s nine-game winning streak.
Clemens Wins Seventh
Straight for Astros
Roger Clemens pitched seven strong innings for his seventh consecutive win as the Astros pounded the Florida Marlins 6-1 in National League play in Houston on Tuesday.
Clemens (7-0) allowed just three hits while striking out 11 for his 317th career win, putting him just one win behind Phil Niekro for 14th place on the all-time list.
The 41-year old Clemens has now won 11 consecutive regular season starts, wrapped around a brief spell in retirement following the World Series defeat for his New York Yankees against the Marlins last October.
Since signing with his hometown Astros in the off-season, Clemens has been brilliant for Houston and is the only seven-game winner in the major leagues.
Ramon Castro hit a solo home run in the second inning to account for the only run off Clemens. Brad Lidge and Brandon Backe finished up for the Astros, completing the four-hitter. Brad Penny (3-2) took the loss, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Morgan Ensberg drove in three runs for Houston, while Lance Berkman had three hits and drove in a pair of runs.
Criag Biggio homered for the Astros, who broke open the game with four runs in the eighth inning to win for the 10th time in 12 games.
In St. Louis, Woody Williams pitched eight strong innings to lead the Cardinals past the Atlanta Braves 5-1.
In Milwaukee, Wes Helms hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 14th inning, giving the Brewers an 8-5 win over the Montreal Expos. Montreal had a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth, but the Brewers scored five runs to tie the game, with Geoff Jenkins hitting a homer.
In San Francisco, Marlon Byrd drove in three runs, leading the Philadelphia Phillies past the Giants 10-4. Pat Burrell had three hits and drove in a run for Philadelphia, while Jim Thome and Chase Utley both had two hits and an RBI.
Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn both homered, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres.
Aaron Harang (3-1) allowed three runs on five hits over six innings. Danny Graves pitched the ninth for his 14th save.
In Denver, Craig Wilson had four hits, two home runs and drove in seven runs, including a bases-loaded triple in the 15th inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates outlasted the Colorado Rockies 15-10.
Jack Wilson had four hits and scored three runs for the Pirates. Salomon Torres (2-1) pitched two shutout innings for the win, while Bobby Hill and Tike Redman both homered.
Javier Lopez (0-1) allowed five runs on four hits in the 15th inning to take the loss.
Matt Holliday and Jeromy Burnitz both homered for the Rockies, while Vinny Castilla had three hits and drove in three runs.
