NEW YORK, 16 May 2004 — Chone Figgins hit his first major league home run — a grand slam — and drove in six runs to lead the Anaheim Angels to a 10-9 extra-inning win over the Orioles in Baltimore on Friday.

Figgins completed his great night by driving in the winning run in the 10th inning with a single after the Orioles had tied the game with three runs in the ninth inning off closer Troy Percival. Scot Shields came on in the 10th to finish the game and record his first save of the season after Percival blew his second save opportunity in four days.

Figgins went five-for-six and scored two runs for the Angels, who had 15 hits in the game. Bengie Molina had three hits and drove in two runs for the Angels, while Jeff DaVanon had two hits and drove in a run.

In Toronto, Brian Daubach hit a tie-breaking two-run double to highlight a six-run eighth inning as the Boston Red Sox eased past the Blue Jays 9-3.

In New York, Bernie Williams drove in three runs to lead the Yankees to a 9-5 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Casey Blake homered in the 10th inning in a tight 8-7 win for the Cleveland Indians over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Rick White (1-0) pitched one inning for the win. Jody Gerut hit a three-run homer for the Indians.

Tim Hudson pitched eight strong innings as the Oakland Athletics beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2. Hudson (4-1) allowed five hits with two strikeouts and two walks to lift his career winning percentage to .712, second best in major league history.

In Chicago, Jacque Jones had three hits for the Minnesota Twins in a 3-2 win over the White Sox.

Marquis Outduels Beckett in Cardinals Win

Jason Marquis pitched 7 2/3 strong innings to outduel World Series MVP Josh Beckett and help the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-3 home victory over the Florida Marlins in National League play on Friday.

Ray Lankford homered for the Cardinals, who roughed up Beckett for six runs on nine hits in just six innings. It was Lankford’s fourth home run of the season but his first since April 21 as the Cardinals won for the fourth time in five games.

In Houston, Cliff Floyd hit a grand slam home run to pace the New York Mets past the Houston Astros 8-3.

Mike Piazza also homered for the Mets, who have won three straight and eight of 12.

Pat Burrell homered and drove in four runs as the Philadelphia Phillies eked out a 6-4 win over the Colorado Rockies. Bobby Abreu also homered for the Phillies.

Sammy Sosa hit his 548th career homer, tying Mike Schmidt for ninth place on the all-time list, in the Chicago Cubs’ 6-1 win over the San Diego Padres. Greg Maddux (3-3) won his 292nd career game, allowing just one run on five hits over eight innings.

Daryle Ward hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the seventh and a run-scoring single to drive in the winning run an inning later, as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2.

Paul Wilson pitched seven strong innings to guide the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wilson (5-0) allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Danny Graves pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save, as the Reds made the most of just three hits.

Cesar Izturis had three hits and drove in a run for L.A.

Kazuhisa Ishii (5-2) allowed two runs on one hit over four innings, but walked seven.

In Phoenix, Brian Schneider hit a two-run homer, powering the Montreal Expos over the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3.
