NEW YORK, 31 May 2004 — J.D. Drew homered and drove in three runs against his former teammates as the Atlanta Braves continued their winning ways with a 9-3 road rout over the Philadelphia Phillies in National League play on Saturday.
Drew's homer helped the Braves win for the seventh time in their last 10 games as they continue to rebound from a slow start to the season.
Dewayne Wise had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Braves, while Drew had two hits.
Rafael Furcal added a two-run triple for the winners to back John Thomson's solid pitching.
Thomson (4-2) went seven strong innings, allowing three runs - one earned - on eight hits while striking out six and walking one.
It was Wise's first three-hit game in the major leagues, as he continues to replace the injured Chipper Jones in the Atlanta line-up. Vicente Padilla (4-5) allowed four runs on five hits over five innings to take the loss, the third in the last five games for the Phillies after they won 12 of 16. Padilla left the game with an inflamed right elbow and was immediately placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Pat Burrell and Jimmy Rollins both had two hits and drove in a run for the Phillies in front of 44,057 fans, their 10th sellout of the season.
In other games, Albert Pujols homered twice, had four hits and drove in three runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-3 rout over the Houston Astros.
Cody McKay also had four hits for the Cards, who had 16 hits. Roger Cedeno homered to support Woody Williams (2-5), who allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings. Wade Miller (5-5) gave up four runs on seven hits over four innings. Craig Biggio and Jeff Kent had two hits and one RBI for the Astros.
In Miami, Mike Lowell homered in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Florida Marlins a 3-2 win over the New York Mets. Justin Wayne (3-1) pitched a perfect 10th for the win. Alex Gonzalez had two hits and drove in a run for Florida. Braden Looper (0-1) allowed the winning homer in his return to Florida after signing with the Mets in the off-season.
Ty Wigginton homered for the Mets.
In Milwaukee, Wes Obermueller pitched six solid innings and hit a three-run double, giving the Brewers a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres.
Obermueller (3-1) allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Dan Kolb pitched the ninth for his 13th save.
Dennis Tankersley (0-1) allowed three runs - none earned - on three hits over six innings while striking out nine. Sean Burroughs and Phil Nevin both had two hits and drove in a run.
Juan Acevedo pitched seven strong innings, leading the Cincinnati Reds past the Montreal Expos 4-1.
Acevedo (3-3) allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts before Danny Graves pitched the ninth for his 23rd save. Adam Dunn homered for Cincinnati. Zach Day (3-6) allowed three runs on three hits over seven innings with six walks and five strikeouts.
In Pittsburgh, Rob Mackowiak had a three-run homer and a two-run double as the Pirates battled a 10-7 win over the Chicago Cubs. Jason Kendall had four hits for the Pirates, who had 16 hits. Josh Fogg (3-4) allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings. Sergio Mitre (2-4) allowed six runs on 10 hits over 3 2/3 innings to take the loss. Aramis Ramirez homered, had three hits and drove in four runs for the Cubs, while Derrek Lee also homered.
In Los Angeles, Juan Encarnacion and Adrian Beltre both hit three run homers as the Dodgers cruised to a 10-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Paul LoDuca had four hits and drove in two runs, while Shawn Green also had two RBI. Jose Lima (4-1) allowed just two hits over eight innings for the win.
Brandon Webb (2-5) allowed six runs on eight hits in four-plus innings.
In San Francisco, Yorvit Torrealba had two hits and drove in two runs, leading the Giants over the Colorado Rockies 5-3. Dustan Mohr homered for the Giants. Jerome Williams (4-3) went 7 1/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
