LONDON, 8 June 2004 — Paceman Pedro Collins took six for 53 to bowl West Indies to an innings and 99 runs victory in the second and final Test against Bangladesh in Kingston, Jamaica, yesterday.
The visitors were bowled out midway through day four for 176 in their second innings after the last seven wickets went for down for 24. The first Test in St Lucia was drawn to the embarrassment of the home side, but they fought back to clinch the series 1-0.
A magnificent unbeaten 261 by Ramnaresh Sarwan and centuries from Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul enabled West Indies to declare their first innings at 559 for four on Sunday and the result was rarely in doubt after that. After 30 Tests since being granted Test status, the Bangladeshis still await their first victory.
Itinerary Problems Plague South Africa’s India Tour
In New Delhi, a cramped international schedule has caused itinerary problems for South Africa’s tour to India later this year, India’s cricket board said yesterday.
The two boards were unable to agree whether they should play only Tests or one-dayers during the November series because there was no time to complete a full series, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Jagmohan Dalmiya said in a statement.
“The real problem is that we are having to squeeze in a two-month schedule into a one-month capsule,” Dalmiya said.
The United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) has proposed a one-day tour but the BCCI wants a Test series, he added.
Dalmiya said he would discuss the issue with UCB president Raymond Mali during an International Cricket Council (ICC) meet in Dubai this week, but added the matter, if unresolved, could go before the ICC.
