RIYADH, 11 June 2004 — The staff of Riyadh Kharj Hospital and Prince Sultan Cardiac Center turned out in force for the RKH-PSCC Junefest Tennis Tournament 2004 at the Riyadh Armed Forces Hospital courts.
The men’s team competition and ladies singles and doubles in various categories have been squeezed into a one-month schedule in what promises to be a fun-filled tournament.
The event was put together by the organizing committee chaired by Ai Peng Go with Ed Cabanes as co-chairman. It has the full support of sports coordinators Muhammad Jaime Nepomuceno and Muhammad Al Asiri and RKH/MSD sports affairs director Capt. Fahd Al Hijary. After six days of action, three men’s team matches, nine ladies singles and four ladies doubles were completed.
Winning on opening day in the ladies singles B category were Geraldine O’Reilly over Suzzane O’Shea 8-3, Riva Dilla over Abina Bermingham 8-3 and Lovejoy Cacayuran over Precy Boncalon 8-4, while the pair of Nini Dimalanta-Barbora Klimkova beat Ian Villa-Debbie Nueguera 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. The start of the men’s team event was marked by a pair of thrilling battles that were decided via tiebreaks. Danny Risol and James Onia of Team 2 pipped Team 1’s Al Puse and Rogie Galeza 8-7 (7-5) in the doubles B1 and B2.
The doubles A1 and A2 match between Team 3’s Nelson de Leon and Resty de la Cruz and Team 4’s Rolly Barrozo and Jojo de Castro also went to tiebreak. De Leon and de la Cruz eventually prevailed 8-7 (7-5) when de Castro netted a return, capping their rally from 6-3 down.
In another extended absorbing match, the pair of Art Ubando and Marlon Aliasas of Team 6 outlasted Team 5’s Bong Bueta and Peter Stanek 8-7 (13-11). Dimalanta routed Riva Dilla 8-2, Ian Villa crushed Lleony Galpao 8-1and Marlyn Villasenor stopped Cacayuran 8-2 in ladies singles A second day matches.
The ladies second day winners include Galpao, Amy Arat-Tess Dumot and Edith Manangan-Alice Arat who downed Joan Bunda, Dilla-Bunda, Abigail Caringal-Myrna Martinez 8-4 in the singles B, upper doubles and lower doubles in that order.
On the third day, Amy Arat, Klimkova and Iolani Cabaguing-Joy Perez defeated Ruby Cruz 8-5, Abel Racellis 8-4 and Riva Dilla-Racellis in the singles A, singles B and upper doubles categories.
