SAN FRANCISCO, 21 June 2004 — Edgardo Alfonzo produced a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to nudge the San Francisco Giants to a 6-4 win over the Boston Red Sox in Interleague play on Saturday.
It was the first pinch-hit home run of Alfonzo’s career and broke a 4-4 tie after the Red Sox had rallied from an early 4-0 deficit.
In Los Angeles, Hideki Matsui notched a three-run homer in his first at-bat against Hideo Nomo to lead the New York Yankees past the Dodgers 6-2.
In Chicago, Michael Barrett grabbed a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying the Cubs past the Oakland Athletics 4-3.
In Milwaukee, Geoff Jenkins belted a tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning as the Brewers edged the Minnesota Twins 7-6.
