MUNICH, 30 August 2004 — Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez won his fourth European Tour title of the year with a two-shot victory at the BMW International Open yesterday, with the European Ryder Cup team to be finalized later in the day.
The 40-year-old, who has already sealed his place in Bernhard Langer’s team for next month’s match against the United States, fired a closing six-under-par 66 to finish at 21-under 267.
Frenchman Thomas Levet, tied for the lead with Jimenez overnight, had to settle for second place after carding a 68. Briton Colin Montgomerie, who is hoping for one of Langer’s two wildcard picks, shared third place, also after a 68.
Level with Montgomerie were compatriot Paul Casey, whose 65 earned him an automatic spot on Langer’s team, and Germany’s Alex Cejka, who closed with a 65.
Funk Overcomes Heat to Lead Cromwell Event
In Cromwell, Connecticut, Fred Funk and a pair of fellow over 40s had no problems handling the heat and humidity Saturday in the third round of $720,000 PGA tournament.
Funk, 48, shot a 1-under-par 69 to take a one-shot lead over Tom Byrum, 43, and the 44-year-old Corey Pavin in 90-degree heat with high humidity.
Funk, the second-round joint leader with Zack Johnson, had five birdies and four bogeys to finish at 9-under 201.
After birdying the first two holes to move to 10-under, Funk bogeyed three of the final four holes on the front nine to fall to 7-under, but he recovered on the back nine to birdie 11, 14 and 17 and a bogey at the 12th, placed him as the leader after three rounds.
Byrum had a 67 and Pavin, the first round leader, posted a 68 to finish at 8-under 202.
Hunter Mahan and Joey Sindelar are at 7-under, nine players are at 6-under and six are four back at 5-under, including Johnson, who struggled to a 73.
