ISLAMABAD, 19 September 2004 — Pakistan yesterday staged its first ever women’s soccer match to mark world football governing body FIFA’s Fair Play Day which officials said would help boost women’s sports in this Muslim country.
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) organized the match and coach Tariq Lutfi said it would go a long way in promoting women’s sports in the country.
“When women can play cricket and hockey they can also play soccer as we are adhering to the strict dress codes of long trousers and full shirts,” said Lutfi.
Some 45 players from all over the country were called in for the match. “The girls are really focused and have shown great interest, we can move forward if soccer is introduced to girls at school and university levels,” said Lutfi.
