JAKARTA, Indonesia, 19 December 2004 — Indonesian Olympic gold medalist Taufik Hidayat defeated the world’s top badminton player Lin Dan in a grueling rubber-set match yesterday and advanced to the finals of the men’s’ singles of the Djarum Indonesia Open. Playing before more than 5,000 home spectators at the Jakarta’s Bung Karno Indoor Tennis Stadium, the defending champion Hidayat came from behind to eliminate 1st seed Dan 5-15, 15-5, 15-11.
Hidayat will play the today’s final against another Chinese, 3rd seed Hong Chen who alsooust his compatriot and 2nd seed Bao Chunlai, 6-15, 15-6, 15-9. Hadiyanto and Yulianto defeated Malaysians Chew Choon Eng and Choong Tan Fook 15-7, 13-15, 15-3, while Haifeng and Yun beat other Indonesian pair of Flandy Limpele and Eng Hian 17-15, 15-8. Chinese shuttlers showed domination in the tournament, setting up an all-Chinese final in the women’s doubles and placing one finalist each in all other four competitions. Top seed Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen early defeated South Korean pair and 5th seed Lee Kyung Won and Ha Jung Eun, 15-3, 15-5, making it to the finals.
