JONKOPING, Sweden, 19 December 2004 — Ray Whitney scored his second goal in two nights as the World Stars bounced back from an embarrassing loss to rout Swedish champion HV71 5-1 on Friday.
Whitney, who scored the locked-out NHL players’ lone goal in a 6-1 loss to Farjestad the night before, also set up Alexander Daigle’s tally at 14:48 in the first period, six minutes after his opening goal against HV71. Mats Sundin, one of Sweden’s most popular players, assisted on Whitney’s first goal.
“We played much better than last night,” said Sundin, the Toronto Maple Leafs captain. “We played more disciplined hockey. It’s no fun to lose, even if it’s an exhibition.”
The World Stars played a much better defensive game and they were also more physical. Martin Brodeur and Dominik Hasek, who gave up all six goals the night before, shared goaltending duties. The World Stars improved their record to 5-2 on their 10-game, seven-country European tour.
Others scoring for the World Stars were Jamal Mayers and John-Michael Liles in the second period, and Sergei Fedorov late in the third. Andreas Jamtin notched HV71’s only goal midway through the third, beating Hasek, who replaced Brodeur at the halfway point of the game. “No big deal,” Jamtin said.
HV71 played 18-year-old goalie Magnus Akerlund the whole game. He stopped 38 shots. The World Stars play their final game in Sweden today against Linkoping before finishing the tour with games in Oslo, Norway, and Poland next week.
