NEW YORK, 8 November 2005 — Jason Richardson scored 24 points and Troy Murphy had 11 points and 10 rebounds to help the Golden State Warriors edge the New York Knicks 83-81 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Baron Davis returned after missing a game with a strained hamstring and added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors (2-1), who kept the Knicks winless so far this season.
New York coach Larry Brown slipped to 0-3 after joining the Knicks from the Detroit Pistons in the off-season after New York trailed by seven points at the half and were unable to hold on the one-point lead they grabbed in the final six minutes.
Adonal Foyle pulled down 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who won for the first time on the road this season despite being out-rebounded 51-40 and shooting just 40 percent from the field and 47 percent from the foul line.
Stephon Marbury led New York with 15 points and six assists, with Brown using three rookies on the floor at various times in an attempt to kick-start his club’s offense.
One of the rookies, Channing Frye, had 12 points for the Knicks, who are coming off a disappointing 33-49 season in 2004-05.
Eddy Curry and Trevor Ariza both added 11 points for New York, but Curry saw limited playing time after getting into early foul trouble.
Quentin Richardson was held scoreless until the final minute when he scored a pair of baskets to make the final score closer, although the Knicks never really threatened to take the lead.
The Knicks now go on the road for a six-game road trip still looking for their first win of the season.
In Phoenix, Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit two free throws in the final 13.3 seconds as the Sacramento Kings beat the Suns 118-117.
Peja Stojakovic scored 33 points and Abdur-Rahim scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Kings.
Leandro Barbosa scored 23 points and Steve Nash scored 18 points and had 13 assists for the Suns.
In Los Angeles, Kobe Bryant had 37 points as the Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets 112-92.
Chris Mihm added 20 points and 13 rebounds for Los Angeles, as the Lakers improved to 2-1 under Phil Jackson. Lamar Odom also had 20 points. Carmelo Anthony had 21 points for the Nuggets (1-3), while Andre Miller added 20.
