NEW YORK, 17 December 2005 — Marty Turco made 24 saves to record his second shutout of the season in helping the Dallas Stars to a 2-0 victory over the high-flying Ottawa Senators at the Corel Center on Thursday.

Brenden Morrow scored a goal and set up another to spark the Stars attack but it was Turco who stole the spotlight, shutting down the NHL’s most potent offense to notch his 23rd career shutout and lead Dallas to their sixth win in seven games.

“He’s a good goalie, there’s no question about that,” Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said.

The Senators entered the game sitting on top of the Eastern Conference standings and leading the NHL in goals, but for the second time this month were shutout slumping to their third loss in four games.

Dallas opened the scoring midway through the first period when Morrow converted a power play opportunity for his 10th of the season.

After a scoreless second period, the Stars got their insurance marker midway through the third, Jere Lehtinen beating Ray Emery for his 17th of the campaign.

Emery, who set an NHL record by winning his first nine career starts, turned in a solid effort in the Ottawa net by making 27 saves but still absorbed his second straight loss.

In East Rutherford, Marc Savard scored a power-play goal with five seconds remaining in overtime to earn the Atlanta Thrashers a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Ilya Kovalchuk, with his 20th of the season, and Jean-Pierre Vigier scored during regulation for the Thrashers while Scott Gomez and Alexander Mogilny answered for the slumping Devils, who have lost five of their last six.

In Raleigh, Rod Brind’Amor scored both goals and Martin Gerber made 25 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 to collect their fourth win in five games.

Michael Rupp’s unassisted third period goal spoiled Gerber’s shutout bid.

In Sunrise, Olli Jokinen scored the game-winning power-play goal less than two minutes into overtime to give the Florida Panthers a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings.

Gary Roberts and Rostislav Olesz scored during regulation for the Panthers, while Daniel Cleary and Henrik Zetterberg tallied for the Red Wings.

In Philadelphia, Anson Carter scored a pair of third-period goals and assisted on another in leading the Vancouver Canucks to 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4.

Nolan Baumgartner, Markus Naslund and Trevor Linden also scored for the Canucks, who extended their win streak to four games.

In Edmonton, Ethan Moreau converted a power play opportunity with just over a minute remaining in regulation to spark the Oilers to a 5-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Fernando Pisani scored twice for Montreal, including an insurance maker into an empty net, while Raffi Torres and Marc-Andre Bergeron each tallied once.

In Nashville, Steve Sullivan, Vernon Fiddler, Martin Erat, Yanic Perreault and Paul Kariya each had goal and Pekka Rinne stopped 35 shots to get a win on his NHL debut, helping the Predators to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

In St. Paul, Marco Sturm had the only goal in the third period to lift the Boston Bruins to 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild.

In Glendale, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko and Vincent Lecavalier, on a shorthanded effort each had goal while Sean Burke made 26 saves as the Tampa Bay Lightning jolted the Phoenix Coyotes 3-1 to notch their sixth win in seven games.
