A woman demanded from her would-be groom that he give up his Qat habit before she accepted his hand in marriage. Qat, the leaves of the Catha Edulis tree known to give users a state of euphoria and stimulation, is used frequently in Yemen and the Horn of Africa. The bride-to-be said the use of the drug, which is chewed to extract the effect, was harming the man’s health. The man acquiesced and plowed under his field of Qat trees. The married man now grows a healthier alternative: fruit.
