JEDDAH, 20 January 2006 — Muslim Education Society, which runs 200 institutions in the southern Indian state of Kerala and a few others in Tamil Nadu and the Gulf, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its MES Mampad College for a year beginning Feb. 1.
“A highlight of the year-long celebration is the participation of several thousand members of the MES alumni associations in the Kingdom,” E.P. Moyinkutty, president, MES Mampad College, told reporters over the weekend.
The college, which has 3,000 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels — over 50 percent of them women —gives annual scholarships to underprivileged students and will consider expanding the scope of its scholarship scheme, said Moyinkutty, who attended a four-day seminar organized by the Islamic Development Bank Special Assistance & Scholarship Program Office.
Mohammad Hassan Salem, acting director of the IDB scholarship office, conducted the seminar, which reviewed and discussed its assistance and scholarships granted to non-government organizations.
The college, established by neurologist P.K. Abdul Gafoor in 1965 in an educationally, socially and economically backward area in the state’s Malappuram district, completed its library and science laboratory building with a grant of nearly seven million rupees received from the IDB, he said.
