JEDDAH, 8 February 2006 — Medical interns in Jeddah yesterday filed a lawsuit against King Abdul Aziz University because their allowances were reduced six months sooner than their peers in other cities.
Around 30 medical interns filed the suit at the Court of Grievances against KAAU Dean Osama Taib who applied the 44-percent deduction.
For the past six months interns have been receiving SR6,000 instead of SR10,700.
The decision to reduce interns’ allowances was supposed to take effect this year. But for unexplained reasons, KAAU interns were hit with the pay cut during last year.
“It is not just that; Saudis who studied abroad and came here for their internship are receiving their full allowances. So why is the discrimination?” said intern Fahad Abdul Jabbar, who has joined the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs are scheduled to a Feb. 25 hearing. There was no comment from KAAU officials.
