JEDDAH, 29 March 2006 — Jizan will host the final of the Prince Sultan ibn Fahd Cup football tournament for the mentally challenged.
The tournament final starting today will run for three days. Teams from the four sport centers for handicapped at the Kingdom namely Jeddah, Riyadh, Najran and the host city Jizan are entered.
Nasser Al-Saleh, secretary-general at the Special Sports Federation, said, “thanks to Prince Sultan ibn Fahd, president of Youth Welfare for his support for the federation’s programs and all 15 centers in the Kingdom.”
The prince’s encouragement enabled them to make it all the way to the finals, he said adding “it’s an honor and something to be proud of to reach this far for our special players.”
Al-Saleh said that through these tournaments they will choose the qualified players who will represent the Kingdom in the World Cup 2006 special football to be held in Germany in September.
Al-Saleh said the September event marks the second straight participation by the Saudi special football team.
Al-Saleh also expressed his gratefulness for the coaches and staff at the sport centers for handicapped for their efforts, “especially because most of them are Saudis who are working voluntarily.”
In closing, Al-Saleh encouraged support from the businessmen and media for the special football team.
