HOUSTON, 16 May 2006 — American Brett Wetterich held his nerve over the closing stretch to secure a maiden PGA Tour title by a stroke at the Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Texas Sunday.

One off the pace at the start of the day, the 32-year-old from Ohio fired a two-under-par 68 in bright sunshine at the TPC at Las Colinas to finish on 12-under 268.

Wetterich, ranked 208th in the world at the start of the week, recovered from early bogeys at the fourth and fifth and covered the back nine in three-under 32 as his closest challengers faded.

South African Trevor Immelman, co-leader overnight with Australia’s Adam Scott, had moved two strokes clear at the turn in a bid for his own breakthrough Tour victory before falling out of contention.

He dropped three shots in six holes from the 10th and did well to salvage a par at the last, after driving into water, before signing for a 70 and second place at 11 under.

American Omar Uresti, who twice held a share of the lead in the final round, tied for third with Scott at 10 under after closing with a 68.

World No. 9 Scott failed to reproduce his form of the first three days, making three consecutive bogeys from the eighth on his way to a scrappy 71.

For much of the day, the 26-year-old Immelman was in control of the tournament.

He recovered from a bogey at the par-four third with birdies on six and seven to reach the turn two ahead of the chasing pack.

His playing partner and good friend Scott collected his third bogey in a row when he horseshoed out with a four-footer for par at the 10th.

Hoffman tumbled out of contention after finding water on 14 before Immelman and Wetterich birdied the par-three 13th to move one shot clear of a tightly bunched leaderboard. The South African finally relinquished the lead when he bogeyed the par-four 15th after pushing his drive behind trees to the right.

Wetterich parred the hole to stay out in front on his own, and retained a one-stroke cushion after he and Immelman collected two-putt birdies at the par-five 16th.

Webb Completes Wire-to-Wire Win

In Williamsburg, Virginia, Hall of Famer Karrie Web fired a one-under 70 to complete a convincing wire-to-wire victory in the $2.2 million LPGA Michelob Ultra Open on Sunday.

With a total of 14-under 270, the 31-year-old Australian finished seven shots in front of Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa and South Korean Hee-Won Han, and pocketed the $330,000- first prize.

After a 66 on Saturday, Webb entered the final round with a five-shot lead, and she never showed any signs of coming back to the pack.

She birdied three and five before a brief lapse brought bogeys at the sixth and eighth.

Webb closed the front nine with a birdie and followed a bogey at 15 with a birdie at 16.

She two-putted for par after her solid approach on 18 to wrap up the win.

Ochoa, who had a win and three second-place finishes in her last four starts, carded a 72 that included a bogey at 18 which cost her outright second place. Han fired a 70.

Defending champion Cristie Kerr was coming off a come-from-behind victory last week, but she couldn’t produce a similar rally here.
