JEDDAH, 31 May 2006 — It was an event to remember for leading Saudi singer Muhammad Abdo’s fans at the Jeddah Hilton on Monday night.

They came in large numbers a few hours before Abdo was to arrive and occupied vantage points to take a close look at one of the most popular singers in the Arab world.

And finally when he was escorted into the Al-Qasr Hall of the hotel, his fans milled about with many seeking his autographs.

As Abdo settled down in his chair, a video song featuring him was played on the screen. The song by him is in praise of the Saudi team now in Germany for the World Cup.

“I pray and hope that our team not only does well but returns with the coveted World Cup,” Abdo remarked.

“The song is meant to wish and encourage our team to do very well.”

The Saudi Telecom Company (STC), which organized the event, quoted Presidency of Youth Welfare President Prince Sultan ibn Fahd as saying that the STC’s successful track record symbolizes success for the Saudi national team.

“On offer from the STC are cars as gifts to the team, a move that has been welcomed by football fans and sports lovers,” an STC spokesman said.

The best player of the Saudi team playing against Uzbekistan and Kuwait will each receive a car from the STC. The STC has also reached agreements with various Saudi clubs in a bid to improve their monetary status.
