SRINAGAR, 26 June 2007 — Two civilians were killed and 14 others were wounded in a powerful explosion near the main bus stand at Doda in Jammu region yesterday afternoon.
Police said militants hurled a grenade near the Doda bus stand which exploded causing injuries to 16 persons.
“All the injured were evacuated to hospital for treatment. However, two critically injured civilians succumbed to their injuries in the Doda district hospital,” a senior police officer here said.
Police and paramilitary troops surrounded and searched the bus stand area but no arrests have been made so far.
Yesterday’s explosion came after nine persons including eight intruding militants and a trooper were killed in north Kashmir yesterday.
Police yesterday said five freshly infiltrated militants were spotted in village Ismail-de-Dera near the Line of Control (LOC) in Keran sector of Kupwara border district late Sunday.
“The group of militants was surrounded and challenged upon which they opened fire at the security forces resulting in a sustained gunfight that lasted for several hours. In the end five militants and an army trooper died while two soldiers were wounded,” a senior police officer here said.
In another gunbattle near the LOC, alert troops foiled an infiltration bid and killed three militants.
