RIYADH, 1 July 2007 — Riyadh Police announced yesterday that it arrested three foreigners, aged between 28 and 30, for stealing gold bracelets from a jewelry shop in Al-Shafa district. The police said that the shopkeeper reported the theft and related the modus operandi of the thieves. He said that one of the men kept him occupied by asking questions about specific items and prices while the other two stole the bracelets from the store. The three men then ran away with the stolen gold pieces. Police tracked them down and arrested them.
Iron Thieves Arrested
YANBU, 1 July 2007 — Police arrested a gang of thieves who stole huge amounts of iron from an industrial site in Yanbu. The gang — which consisted of two Saudis and three expatriates (two of whom were overstayers) — were arrested with the goods loaded in two trucks. Yanbu’s Second Tourism Forum
YANBU, 1 July 2007 — The Yanbu Chamber of Commerce and Industry in cooperation with other sectors recently held the Second Yanbu Tourism Forum in which various bodies delivered tourism-related papers. The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu presented a paper highlighting its experience in encouraging tourism to the area. Makkah Raids Net 1,511 People
MAKKAH, 1 July 2007 — Police arrested a total of 1,511 people in raids to net overstayers and criminals last week. According to Maj. Sahl Al-Otaibi, spokesman for Makkah police, among those arrested police caught 154 illegal street sellers, 1,031 overstayers, 320 wanted criminals, and four men wanted in relation to drug related cases. Gurayat Plant Hit by Jellyfish Attack
JEDDAH, 1 July 2007 — The Saudi Electricity Company is trying to get two of its gas turbine units of the Gurayat power plant in the Eastern Province up and running following a massive jellyfish attack that threw the operation awry earlier in the day, the company statement said. The plant lost 2000 megawatt from its total capacity of 2400 megawatt as a result of the attack. The company had spent SR45 million to prevent such attacks from jellyfish.
WAMY Meeting Held in Jeddah
JEDDAH, 1 July 2007 — A meeting of the directors of WAMY (World Assembly of Muslim Youth) offices in Arab countries and officials of youth organizations was held here recently. Dr. Saleh Al-Wohaiby, secretary-general of WAMY, gave a lecture on management of nongovernmental organizations while Dr. Ibrahim Al-Qaeed gave a presentation on “Ten Tips for a Successful Personality.”
