THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, 28 April 2007 — An institute of space science and technology will start functioning at the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) main facility here this year.
The federal Cabinet on Thursday approved the Rs.2.4bn plan to set up the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IITS).
The institute will function at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center for two years until a permanent campus is built. ISRO had proposed the institute as part of its efforts to train personnel for its various missions and to overcome the shortage of engineers and scientists.
IIST will train 150-200 students annually, whose education expenses would be met by the ISRO through scholarships and assistantships.
