THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, 28 April 2007 — The Kerala Education Department has launched Child Census 2007 to collect comprehensive data on the education of children up to 18 years.
Some 26,000 supervisors will visit 8.2 million households in the State on May 3, 4 and 5 with questionnaires to collect details about the education of children.
This is part of the Federal Human Resource Ministry’s program to collect information about students. Education Minister M.A. Baby said the enumerators would not collect data on the income status of the families. The thrust of the drive is to assess the dropout rate under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan up to the 12th class.
Cop Suspended for Insulting Antony
A Kerala police official who derisively described Federal Defense Minister A.K. Antony as “shorty” on a wireless message recently has been suspended.
Circle Inspector Jeevanand, on VIP duty during Antony’s recent visit to Alappuzha made the comment when a colleague asked when he would return from duty.
Jeevanand said on the wireless, “Let that shorty pass by.” Alappuzha superintendent of police P.E. Jeyaraj confirmed that the offensive language was used against the minister.
The message was recorded at the city police control room and further investigation identified the inspector. A senior officer had invariably used the same epithet to refer to Antony while he was the Kerala chief minister.
