ISLAMABAD, 18 April 2007 — The Supreme Judicial Council headed by Justice Rana Bhagwandas will resume hearing of the case brought by the government against suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry today.
The registrar of the top court has issued a code of conduct for all lawyers and journalists in order to prevent chaos during the hearing. The Islamabad administration has also been directed to take measures to avoid any untoward incident.
“The government lawyers would respond to our objections to the composition and competency of the SJC tomorrow,” Aitzaz Ahsan, one of the Chaudhry’s lawyers said yesterday.
Chaudhry has also decided to challenge the validity of the “presidential reference” against him in the Supreme Court.
“We will petition the court under Article 184-Section 3 of the Constitution,” Ahsan told Arab News.
Police, meanwhile, detained dozens of political activists yesterday ahead of protests expected today. Lawyers and opposition parties have planned protests outside the Supreme Court.
