ALIGARH, 27 April 2007 — The situation in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus once again turned violent following the murder of a student on Wednesday night. The vice chancellor and registrar of the university vacated their official residences on the campus citing security concerns and threats to their lives and that of their families.
Angry over the murder of Qaisar Faliq, a B. Tech final year student, a group of students yesterday morning attacked the residence of the registrar and ransacked it. The students also went on rampage damaging vehicles and other university property.
The AMU Proctor Professor Akhlaq Ahmed was also attacked by the angry mob of students and was admitted to the AMU Medical College Intensive Care Unit on Wednesday. He was discharged yesterday.
All exams that were to be held yesterday were cancelled. The district administration called in for reinforcement of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and State Police Armed Constabulary (PAC) and deployed them in and around the AMU campus. According to a police official, a group of students went on rampage yesterday morning and attacked the residence of Professor Faizan Mustafa, the registrar of the university.
The registrar had just left the residence when the incident took place. Sensing the danger, Acting Vice Chancellor Professor M. Salahuddin also vacated his residence due to security reasons.
According to AMU sources, trouble has been brewing in the AMU campus following the murders of two students during the last fortnight, which has led to panic and unrest among the students.
