Man, 91, Rides Car for First Time
JEDDAH, 10 May 2007 — A 91-year-old Saudi man recently rode in a car for the first time in his life, the Al-Madinah daily reported yesterday. The man, who lives in a small village near Taif, has remained a bachelor all his life and only traveled to neighboring villages by foot. He was recently compelled to ride in a car after he needed to visit a hospital in Jeddah to undergo medical treatment.
Woman Jailed for Forced Head Shaving
JEDDAH, 10 May 2007 — A court here sentenced a woman to 15 days in prison and 35 lashes after she shaved the head of her ex-husband’s 12-year-old daughter from a previous marriage in order to exact revenge against him for divorcing her. The court heard that the couple had divorced a few months ago after 11 years of marriage. The 12-year-old girl was visiting the woman with her half sisters (the woman’s daughters) when she forced her to sit on the floor and shaved her head. She then handed the girl her hair in a bag to give to her father. When the judge asked the woman why she had done so, she said, “I shaved her hair because she asked me to. She had lice and it was very dirty and difficult to comb.” The judge then called for a medical report, which showed that there was no trace of lice in the girl’s head. The woman was found guilty and sentenced to 15 days in prison and 35 lashes.
