KUWAIT CITY, 13 May 2007 — The United States has decided to release the last four Kuwaiti prisoners in Guantanamo Bay within the next four months, a Kuwaiti daily said yesterday.
Al-Wasat, quoting informed sources, said US authorities had informed Kuwait that its remaining citizens in the military base on Cuba do not constitute a danger to American national security.
The daily quoted the sources as saying the prisoners would be released before the start of Ramadan which begins by mid-September.
Foreign Minister Sheikh Muhammad Al-Sabah told reporters he would travel to Washington within the “next few days” carrying a letter from the emir to the US administration regarding the Kuwaiti detainees in Guantanamo.
He confirmed that promises had been made to free Kuwaitis from the prison but denied that a date had been set for their release.
The United States has so far freed eight of the 12 Kuwaiti prisoners in Guantanamo. They have faced trial in Kuwaiti courts and acquitted of charges of joining Al-Qaeda and fighting US forces under Afghanistan’s ousted Taleban.
