MAKKAH, 18 May 2007 — A three-year-old girl died and a two-year-old boy was injured in a house fire that broke out in Makkah’s Al-Mansoura district, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday. Civil Defense rescuers had to break into a locked room where the brother and sister were found. Investigations revealed that the children were at home alone at the time of the blaze. The mother reportedly locked them in the house and went to visit a neighbor. The cause of the fire was attributed to an air conditioner.
Graduation Ceremony at Saudi Aramco
DHAHRAN, 18 May 2007 — A graduation ceremony was held at the Saudi Aramco for 24 Master of Education (M.Ed) students, who graduated from the Arabian Society for Human Resource Management (ASHRM) with degrees in Human Resource Development (HRD). Founded in 1991, ASHRM is an organization concerned with promoting the HR profession in the Kingdom by running educational programs. The society holds monthly programs and conferences, and has published various studies and publications. ASHRM has also developed partnerships with international educational institutions that offer HR programs in the US, including the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Police Probe Murder of Cabbie
DAMMAM, 18 May 2007 — Eastern Province police are investiagting the murder of a Pakistani taxi driver after two young men — a 26-year-old Saudi and a 29-year-old Arab expatriate — suspected of killing the man and putting his body in the boot of the taxi, were arrested on Wednesday. Police have also detained an African woman who was found with the Saudi suspect and are investigating whether she is somehow involved in the crime. Col. Muhammad Al-Asaf, the head of the Eastern Province police station, said the men confessed to the crime. Police suspect the men killed the cab driver after he resisted their attempt to take away the vehicle, which may have been used to illegally transport the woman from Riyadh to this Gulf city. Police believe the men then tried to destroy the evidence by setting the vehicle on fire with the body in the trunk.
