ISLAMABAD, 21 May 2007 — Suspended Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry will address the Supreme Court Bar Association on May 26, Chaudhry’s defense lawyers including Munir Malik and Aitzaz Ahsan said during a press conference yesterday.

Acting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Rana Bhagwandas has given permission for the event.

Malik said the Sindh High Court Bar Association has renewed its invitation to Justice Chaudhry, which he has accepted and a date will be fixed for the event after consultations.

Chaudhry was scheduled to address the Sindh High Court Bar Association on May 12 but violence erupted when the suspended chief justice landed in Karachi leaving more than 40 people dead.

Malik said Chaudhry will address the Abbottabad Bar Association on May 22.

President Pervez Musharraf’s suspension of Chaudhry triggered nationwide protests by lawyers and opposition parties who termed the move an attack on the independence of judiciary.
