JEDDAH, 3 June 2007 — The fourth International Water Association conference opens in Singapore today.
The annual Leading-Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technologies focuses specifically on advances and developments in water and wastewater technologies. The conference consists of a single plenary session of invited speakers on the first day, followed by two parallel sessions (one for drinking water and one for wastewater) on days two and three.
The sessions on day one and two of the conference will focus on the New Advances in the Fundamental Science of Water and Wastewater Technologies, followed by State of the Art in Water and Wastewater Technologies.
A highlight of this year’s conference is a presentation by Professor Perry L. McCarty — the 2007 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate — on the impact of gases emitted by the biological treatment of wastewater on the global environment. The inclusion of the topic links the subject of gas emission from the biological treatment of wastewater with the issue of global warming.
Chairman of Bushnak Industries, Adil Bushnak commenting on the conference described it as a valuable forum for discussion as it paralleled the Stockholm Water Week. “It concentrates on the technologies and the practical business of the water industry, whereas the Stockholm event tends to be more of an academic event,” he said.
Khoo Teng Chye, conference president, said in his welcome address that Singapore was a global water hub for business, investment, research and technology the conference presented an excellent opportunity for bringing together water experts and researchers from all over the world.
