MAKKAH, 8 June 2007 — Who says sports is a man’s domain? The daily Al-Nadwa reported yesterday that two young ladies at an intermediate school in the holy city got into a knock-down-drag-out over which Saudi football team is better and therefore deserved to win last week’s King’s Cup: Al-Hilal or Al-Ittihad. Teachers finally separated the two girls after fellow students failed to break up the fight. For the record: Ittihad won the King’s Cup last Friday 2-1.

Family Couldn’t Catch Furry Little Burglar

DUMD, 8 June 2007 — Civil Defense officials in this southern Saudi town arrested a burglar who was constantly breaking into a family home to raid the kitchen of food. The family called authorities after several failed attempts at catching the culprit on their own. A local daily reported yesterday that the thief was too fast to be caught, in part thanks to the thumbs on the burglar’s feet. Civil Defense officials managed to catch the culprit after shutting the crook in the kitchen and getting a net. The thief was, of course, a baboon. Authorities didn’t say if the arrested ape was later released, or if it faced the death penalty for its crimes.
