YANBU, 10 June 2007 — More than 30 prisoners in Yanbu joined students across the Kingdom yesterday to sit their school and college exams in prison.
According to prison officials, inmates are given the opportunity to complete their education in prison as part of a rehabilitation process.
Capt. Ahmad Al-Amri, a prison official, said that more than 30 inmates of various educational levels are currently taking exams in Yanbu prisons.
He added that the inmates, in cooperation with Yanbu education authorities, have been provided with all the necessary items and atmosphere needed to successfully complete their exams.
More than two years ago, prisons in Yanbu began a process of allowing inmates to complete their education to enable them to start afresh when leaving prison.
Gen. Ali Al-Harthi, director general of prisons, recently said that inmates wishing to pursue university education would also be able to do so. Educational expenses are fully paid for by the prison administration.
