ISLAMABAD, 14 June 2007 — Pakistan yesterday assured the United States of its continued support in the fight on terror, saying it had taken steps to ensure security along its border with Afghanistan, a government statement said.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri gave the assurance to visiting US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher at a meeting in Islamabad, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its war on terror, and it has deployed about 90,000 troops in its tribal areas near Afghanistan to flush out the remnants of Al-Qaeda and Taleban.
Kasuri yesterday told Boucher that Pakistan was committed to fighting extremism and terrorism and he “highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen security along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border,” according to the statement.
Boucher is also expected to meet the chief election commissioner and leaders of opposition parties.
According to some sources, he is likely to discuss election issues with the chief election commissioner.
