RIYADH, 30 June 2007 — Riyadh Police announced yesterday that it arrested two foreign boys, ages 16 and 17, for breaking the windows of a car and attempting to steal items from inside it. In a statement to Arab News, the police said that it received a call from a local man who witnessed the crime. The two suspects ran away when they saw him.
The police later took the descriptions of the two young men from the man who reported the incident. “After a short period of time the suspects with the same descriptions were spotted in a local area. They were arrested and taken in for interrogation,” the statement said.
The police said that investigations have shown that the suspects confessed to a number of other vehicle break-ins. Their case has been transferred to a religious court for them to stand trial.
Court Upholds Riyadh Burglary Ruling
On Thursday, police announced that the Riyadh’s Cassation Court upheld the guilty verdicts of two burglars, who were convicted of stealing money from a real estate office.
A police patrol car spotted the two men stealing money from the office. The burglars later fled after noticing they had been seen. “Their descriptions were given to other police patrol cars in the vicinity and police were able to arrest them after following their movements,” said the police in a statement to Arab News. “The suspects confessed to the crime, which they had committed under the influence of alcohol,” it added.
The two locals were found guilty of burglary and drinking alcohol. They were both sentenced to four years in prison and 600 lashes. Another 80 lashes were also handed to them consuming alcohol.
