DHAKA, 14 July 2007 — Security forces yesterday arrested two top leaders of the outlawed Jamaatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh group including a condemned killer of two judges. Three more JMB members were arrested in separate raids conducted by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka and Mymensingh.
Those arrested are Asadul Islam and Anwar Hossain, members of the JMB’s Majlis-e-Shoura, Mymensingh regional commander Shafiqul Islam, Sagar Hossain and Saiful Islam.
Asadul Islam is one of the seven condemned killers of two judges who were gunned down on Nov. 14, 2005.
Six people including JMB chief Abdur Rahman and his deputy Bangla Bhai were executed for the murder of the judges on March 29.
During the raids, RAB personnel seized two 9mm pistols with nine bullets, seven computers, a large number of CDs and books on ‘jihad’. RAB officials told newsmen they arrested the JMB leaders following a tip off from two people who were detained for the murder of a madrasa teacher.
Controversial Judge Resigns
High Court Judge Faisal Mahmud Faizee who was accused of tampering with his LLB certificate, submitted his resignation to Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruhul Amin yesterday.
Faizee’s LLB certificate was canceled at a special meeting of the Chittagong University syndicate on March 3 after it was discovered that the certificate had been tampered with.
Faizee, in his resignation letter, said some vested interests had unleashed a propaganda against him that was harming the image of the judiciary, hence he wanted to resign.
