SHARJAH, 19 July 2007 — The UAE yesterday established a ministerial committee to formulate a population policy and establish regulations to achieve the government’s goals in relation to the country’s population. The committee has been established following the orders of Sheikh Mohammed ibn Rashid Al-Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE, and ruler of Dubai.
“The formation of the committee is in line with the UAE Government Strategy, which seeks to ensure high efficiency levels in planning sustainable development in the country and ensure a high standard of living for UAE nationals and residents,” said Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Mohammad Al-Gergawi.
Lt. Gen. Sheikh Saif ibn Zayed Al-Nahyan, minister of interior, will chair the Population Committee and Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, minister of state for federal national council affairs, will be deputy chairman. Committee members include Sheikha Lubna Al-Qasimi, minister of economy, Dr. Ali ibn Abdulla Al-Ka’abi, minister of labor, and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the National Security Council.
Al-Gergawi also revealed that the committee would submit regular reports, including recommendations and proposed action plans, to the Prime Minister’s Office as part of the implementation of the strategy.
