SRINAGAR, 21 July 2007 — Kashmir capital Srinagar was rocked by a string of six powerful grenade explosions leading to heavy panic and confusion late yesterday evening.

Police said militants carried out a series of six grenade explosions at Dalgate, Nehru Park, Allochi Bagh, Batmallo, Hari Singh High Street and Narbal crossing late in the evening. “Five persons including two drivers of tourist buses were wounded in Nehru park explosion where the grenade went off inside a parking area. The injured were immediately removed to hospital for treatment,” said a senior police officer here. He said no other causalities were reported in the other five explosions in the city.

The officer said a group of tourists, traveling in a bus after visiting the famous north Kashmir Gulmarg hill resort, escaped narrowly when a grenade missed their bus and exploded on the roadside near the Narbal crossing on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway.
