RAS AL-KHAIMAH, 24 July 2007 — The hearing of the judgment of a case in which a man is charged with killing his two childhood friends has been scheduled to reconvene on Monday.
The brutal incident, which shocked the emirate, happened last month when a man was gunned down in a shopping center. The accused Emirati man in his early 30s then allegedly went to another man’s house and shot him before turning himself over to police. One of the victim’s is survived by a wife and two children, while the other was recently married.
Police have ruled out mental illness in the crime, but no motive has been determined. The case has garnered a lot of local attention and the judge has shut the media out of covering the trial. The man will likely face the death penalty if found guilty.
Meanwhile, the Court of Appeals in Ras Al-Khaimah upheld the sentence of a man accused of chasing his ex-wife who lost control of her vehicle while fleeing him and smashed head-on into a truck. The woman died in the accident. The man was fined DH2,000 and sentenced to two months in prison.
The court also upheld the decision to make the man pay DH200,00 in diya (blood money) to the woman’s surviving family members. The truck driver was found 50 percent at fault and therefore has to pay the other half of the DH400,000 diya ruling.
The man is a foreigner living in the UAE. Reports didn’t say from which Arab country he originates, but that he would be deported after serving his time and paying his fines.
