MAKKAH, 24 July 2007 — Prisoners in Makkah took part in the final day of summertime activities for inmates that were organized by the student activities administration at the Education Department in Makkah. Events have included literary and cultural competitions, drama presentations and sports competitions. More than 500 prisoners participated. Abdullah ibn Dawood Al-Fayez, undersecretary at the governorate of the Makkah region, Bakr Basfar, director of the education department in Makkah, and Brig. Atieh Al-Zahrani, director of Makkah prisons, will attend the function, according to a statement of the supervisor general of the summer clubs at the education administration.
1,246 Arrested in Makkah
MAKKAH, 24 July 2007 — Authorities in the holy city arrested 1,246 men wanted for various violations — mostly related to immigration status — last week. Among those arrested were illegal residents (594), people suspected of minor crimes (285) and beggars (16). A number of people were charged with selling expired foods and 19 stolen cars were recovered, according to Makkah police. An expatriate worker was also found dead in mysterious circumstances at a residential room in a hospital in Makkah Saturday night. An Arab colleague of the man reported the matter to police, who are investigating the death.
