AHSA, 30 July 2007 — A wedding was called off in the eleventh hour over a wedding singer, the daily Al-Yaum reported yesterday. Wedding singers, women who sing traditional songs with percussion accompaniment, are a staple of Saudi weddings, and the bride-to-be didn’t want their wedding to be an exception, for which the groom took exception and said he didn’t have any more cash for the nuptial celebrations. The wife didn’t relent, and neither did the husband, and eventually the marriage ended before it started. Khalas.
Special Mix Turns Shabab Into Kojak
HAFR AL-BATEN, 30 July 2007 — A young Saudi guy (aka shabab) goes to the barbershop in this Saudi town and asks for something to make his hair smooth, straight and shiny — like he’s seen on television, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday. The barber sells the shabab something he called a secret mixture of ingredients that will make his hair fabulous. Instead, in two days the shabab was as bald as Kojak, and he filed a complaint with local police, who detained the barber for shilling “secret mixes” that make people bald.
Guy Steals Goat Liver, Gets Caught
JEDDAH, 30 July 2007 — A man goes to a restaurant with a slaughtered goat to have it cooked. He says he will come back later to pick up the roasted animal for a dinner party. He picks up the goat, but later that night he notices that the liver is missing. The next day the man goes back to the restaurant to confront the owner about the stolen liver. The owner admitted that they kept the liver, thinking that wouldn’t bother the man. After all, a lot of people don’t eat the offal parts of slaughtered animals — the restaurant probably figured the man wouldn’t notice a missing liver. But he did. And he complained to the Jeddah Municipality, which fined the restaurant SR1,000. Talk about an expensive animal organ!
