JEDDAH, 2 August 2007 — The Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry has announced it is planning to hold a two-day International Environment Forum on Oct. 28-30 at the Jeddah Hilton.
The event will tackle the factors that cause pollution and discuss ways of preventing them. The forum will also present papers on the subject of global climate change in recent years and tornadoes in East Asia and the Gulf.
“I regret that there is little care for environmental issues in the Kingdom. I hope this forum will come up with recommendations that could be implemented to fight pollution, protect beaches and shores, and show ways of disposing waste safely,” said Mohammed Al-Juhani, president of the environment committee at the JCCI.
Around 56 international experts are being invited to attend the forum to exchange knowledge on environment related issues. The organizers aim to raise awareness about the environment and outline the impact of pollution and its dangers to humans. They also aim to emphasize the importance of social responsibility in keeping the environment safe. The forum will also stress the need to use natural resources to protect the environment.
Three main topics to be discussed at the forum will be the continuous development of international and local laws to protect the environment; water and oil pollution and the excessive usage of underground water; and air pollution and global warming.
The forum will also discuss car pollution and problems relating to traffic. “We will call on expanding the public transportation in Jeddah to include underground trains, tramways and buses... to help decreasing pollution and traffic jams simultaneously,” Al-Juhani said.
