JEDDAH — Saudi Arabia drew their opening game against Japan 28-28 on Sunday in the 13th Asian Handball Championship in Asfahan, Iran. Iran outplayed China 36-28 and Kuwait downed UAE 36-27 in the other matches.

Al-Nokhba Youth Water Polo

JEDDAH — The Al-Nokhba Water Polo Youth Championship opens tomorrow in Jeddah. The Al-Nokhba Water Polo Championship Men’s Championship kicked off last week to open the new season. Al-Qadisia outplayed Al-Ittihad 10-8 on Wednesday, Ittihad crushed Safa 20-2 on Thursday, and on Friday Ittihad downed Ahli 13-8 at the Youth Welfare Indoor Hall in Jeddah. The men’s event will resume on Feb. 27.

GCC Swimming Championship

JEDDAH — The Saudi youth swimming team had ended their local training camps in Dammam in preparation for the GCC championship to be held in Kuwait. According to Saudi Arabian Swimming Federation official Ali Aoun, the event will have the participation of 25 out of 30 swimmers who were chosen by the technical committee. Named to the team yesterday were Ibrahim Al-Huweish, Yousif Al-Tawfeq, Mohammed Al-Hasawi, Ali Al-Sadig and Abdulaziz Al-Labban. On Friday the youth team consisting of brothers Loai and Hazem Tashkandi, Mousa Al-Moussa, Mohammed Al-Yousif, Rakan Sanbas will travel to Kuwait for the event Feb. 21 to 27.

19th Gulf Cup Meeting

JEDDAH — The Football Federation Presidents meeting held in Muscat, Oman agreed on decisions in connection with the 19th Gulf Cup, to be held there. Though the last version of the event included basketball and handball, it was not clear yet if these sports would be retained. Among the decisions made were forming a technical committee to organize the event.
