JEDDAH, 1 March 2008 — Wehda hammered out a surprise 72-68 victory over Al-Ahli in the AlJawal Saudi Basketball Federation Tournament.
Wehda from Makkah scored their fifth victory of the season while Ahli went down to only their third defeat thus far.
After 8 weeks Ansar are still undefeated with 15 wins though they won their last 5 games by small margins.
They beat Hilal by 3 points 79 -76. They slipped by Wehda 71-68. They beat Ahli and Ittihad by 6, and Ohud by 8. If they stay healthy, they might go without a loss and win the tournament.
Fath have gained some ground with two wins last week. A victory over Nadah 86- 79 and Qadisia 107-82 gave Fath fifth place in the standings. Ansar is first with 15 wins. Ittihad follow league-leading Ansar in second place with a 13-2 win-loss record.
Ohud are in third place with 12-3, Ahli fourth also with 12 –3, Fath fifth with 8-7, Qadisia sixth (7-8) and Hilal seventh (6-9).
Wehda and Nahda both have 5 -10 cards. The battle for the last spots in the playoffs has begun. Hilal have imported Priest Lauderdale, the 7-foot center who won two championships with Ittihad for the rest of the season.
Ahli have changed their import players this week letting go Damon Forney.
After the mid season shuffle the middle teams are trying to make the post-season playoffs by being in the top 8 in the standings.
For Fath, Qadisia, Hilal, Wehda, and Nahda the playoffs are still possible.
